Abstract

In the production of nitrogen hardenable cast iron alloy castings containing silicon, aluminium and chromium with or without other constituents such as nickel, molybdenum, copper or titanium, the castings are produced in a sand mould, and the alloy contains 2,5-4,0 per cent of carbon, silicon up to 1, 0,3-1,75 of aluminium, and 0,5-2,0 of chromium, the percentage of aluminium varying inversely with the total percentage of silicon nickel or other graphitizing elements and the percentage of chromium varying directly with the graphitizing elements so as to result in the production of a casting which either in the as-cast condition or after a short annealing is devoid of carbon in the graphitic form. The content or combined content of nickel, molybdenum copper or titanium is not in excess of 3 per cent. Prior to nitrogenizing, the castings are annealed at 850-1050 DEG C. followed by slow cooling or are hardened by quenching from 800-875 DEG C. in an oil bath or bath of molten salts at 150-200 DEG C. and then reheated to 700-750 DEG C. The castings may also be malleabilized. The castings may be nitrogenized by heating to 450-650 DEG C. in ammonia gas.
