Abstract

A process for making ductile cast iron comprises mixing pig iron, scrap iron and cast iron, a carbonaceous reducing agent, and slag forming materials to produce a slag containing 45-65 per cent silica, 15-20 per cent alumina, and 20-30 per cent of the oxides of calcium, manganese, iron and manganese, and melting the mixture at a temperature between 1400 and 1500 DEG C. to produce a cast iron containing not more than 0.01 per cent of ferrous oxide. An iron-silicon alloy may be added to the bath to increase the acidity of the slag and a final iron containing 2 per cent Si. A deoxidiser, e.g. graphite, silicon carbide, Al, Al-Si-Ti, or Zn may be added prior to casting to give some control over the number of graphite nuclei produced.
