519,303. Alloys. UDY, M. J. Sept. 13, 1938, No. 26737. Convention date, Sept. 7. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, March 28, 1939.] [Class 82 (i)] An iron-chromium-silicon alloy is made by smelting in a submerged arc furnace a charge comprising carbon, silica, an iron-chromium ore, and a base which may or may not be part of the ore, with or without an addition of iron ore, the silica being in excess of that required to form with the base a slag containing one part by weight of silica to 1.7-2.2 parts of base. The quantity of carbon is sufficient to reduce the chromium and iron to metal, and the excess silica to silicon, this excess being such that the resulting iron-chromium-silicon alloy contains, for example, 1-10 per cent. of silicon and less than 6 per cent. of carbon, or 40-50 per cent. of silicon and less than 1 per cent. of carbon.
