Abstract
514,951. Cast iron. DANIELS, F. C. T. May 16, 1938, No. 14575. Convention date, April 8. [Class 72] In the production of grey cast iron, a bath furnace, e.g., an open hearth or electric furnace, is charged with pig iron or. scrap iron, the bath. is brought to substantially above its teeming temperature so as to reduce the carbon content to that appropriate for a white cast iron, the carbon being in a state of extreme dispersion and when the charge is ready for teeming mixing therewith 2.5-25 per cent. of the weight of the total charge of a molten ferrous metal prepared in a cupola and having a high positive graphitising content and containing a proportion of carbon higher than that ultimately desired. In an example 80 per cent. of low carbon metal containing 2.55 per cent. of carbon is mixed with 20 per cent. of molten ferrous metal containing 4.30 of carbon, the final product containing 2.90 of carbon.
