Abstract
An addition agent for molten iron, suitable for the promotion of spheroidal graphite in the iron casting, consists of or includes a composition containing: Mg 10-25 per cent; Ca 3-14 per cent; Fe up to 30 per cent; rare earth metals 0-8 per cent; Si with impurities the balance; the ratio Mg/Ca being between 1,3 and 5,5. The impurities can include: Ni up to 1 per cent; Co up to 1 per cent; Mn up to 0,5 per cent; Cu up to 1 per cent; Al up to 3 per cent. The addition agent may be an alloy having the above composition or a briquette of powdered ingredients, e.g. magnesium, ferrosilicon and calcium-silicon, with a binding agent. In a preferred method of making the alloy, one half of the calcium-silicon required to provide the desired calcium content is charged into an induction furnace, the ferro-silicon is added and the remaining calcium-silicon is charged. When the charge is molten the magnesium is added. Specifications 630,070 and 672,618 are referred to.
