Abstract
546,020. Steel. FASSOTTE, P. C., and COLCLOUGH, T. P. Nov. 19, 1940, No. 16649. [Class 72] In the manufacture of steel, bessemer raw metal is prepared in a cupola or blast furnace, and carbon introduced into it, the raw metal then being preheated to a degree calculated to compensate for deficiency in the combined contents of carbon, silicon and manganese which normally provide exothermic heat in the blowing operation and then blowing the metal in an acid or basic bessemer converter. The cupola charge may contain a high proportion of scrap metal to yield metal with a silicon content of less than 1 per cent. and the molten metal may be preheated to 1400-1550‹C., either in a transfer ladle or a tilting or rotating intermediate vessel heated electrically or by gas oil or pulverised fuel and provided with a controlled atmosphere to prevent oxidation of the heat-giving element in the metal. Specifications 461,958, 474,224, and 474,282 and U.S.A. Specification 1,941,562 are referred to.
