Abstract
PURPOSE: To efficiently refine medium carbon ferrochromium for manufacture of stainless steel without damaging refractories of a bottom blowing converter type smelting furnace and lowering Cr yield by adding high carbon ferrochromium to molten steel charged into the furnace and by melting the ferrochromium while controlling the temp. and carbon content of the molten metal to specified values.
CONSTITUTION: Molten steel is charged into converter type smelting furnace 1 provided with tuyere 2 at the bottom. High carbon ferrochromium 6 is preheated with furnace exhaust gas in shoot 5 and charged together with scrap stainless steel, a Ni source and a slag making agent such as lime. At this time, the molten steel is predecarburized to C; 0.8W4.2% by blowing a mixed gas of oxygen and nitrogen from tuyere 2. The temp. of the molten metal is regulated to the range of [Cr%]+ 1410W1620°C ([Cr%]; the Cr% of the molten steel). When the molten steel is cooled with the additives, fuel is burned with burner 3 to raise the temp. The resulting medium carbon, Cr-contg. molten steel is refined to stainless steel contg. C<0.10% by vacuum decarburization or the like.
