Abstract
296,235. Sieurin, S. E. Dec. 6, 1927. Drawings to Specification. Extracting.-In the method of producing iron sponge by reducing pulverized briquetted ore embedded in a solid reducing agent intimately mixed with lime or magnesia at a temperature below the melting point of the metal and in the absence of air or other gas, an excess of the reducing agent, preferably carbon, is employed in the charge such that free carbon is present in the ash at the end of the reducing process. At the same time the cooling of the product is accelerated to prevent any sulphur present recombining with the reduced metal sponge. If only a little free carbon is present in the ash the cooling should be rapid, and it may be slower if a large percentage of carbon is present. As an example, if the excess of carbon is 20 per cent of the weight of the ash, the latter should be cooled to 850‹ C. in 12 hours and to 500‹ C. in 36 hours.
