Abstract
Calcium ferrite, for use in the production of pig iron, is produced by sintering iron ore with at least an equal amount of limestone. The limestone is crushed so that the size of its particles does not exceed 3 mm. and the ore to a size of not more than 1,5 mm. The sintering temperature is brought up to 1400 DEG C. and after sintering the product is rapidly cooled. The production of the meta- and oxymetaferrite is referred to.ALSO:In the production of pig iron from iron ores admixed with coke and lime-containing ingredients, the usual limestone or lime is wholly or partly replaced by a calcium ferrite which is produced by sintering iron ore with at least an equal amount of limestone. The limestone is crushed so that the size of the particles do not exceed 3 mm. and the ore to a size of not more than 1,5 mm. In sintering, the temperature is brought up to 1400 DEG C. to produce dissociation of the iron oxide and after sintering the product is cooled rapidly so as to prevent the ferrous oxide produced from forming new compounds. The ore used should contain as little sulphur and phosphorus as possible so that the pig iron is adapted for conversion into cast iron or steel. The production of the metal and oxymeta-ferrites is referred to.
