Abstract
503,131. Steel manufacture. EVANS, O. (Dortmund-Hoerder Hutten-Verein. Akt.- Ges.) June 28; 1937, No. 17928. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 18, 1938.] [Class 72] In a process for reducing the amount of manganese lost in producing Thomas steel, so much Thomas slag containing the usual amounts of phosphorus and manganese is added to the charge of ore and fluxes in a blast furnace that the manganese content of the charge does not exceed in quantity the proportion of manganese usually introduced but the amount of phosphorus is in excess of the usual amount and the Thomas iron obtained with the usual manganese content but a higher phosphorus content is then blown, the slag obtained being added to a fresh charge in the blast furnace, the procedure being repeated until the proportion of manganese to phosphorus in the Thomas slag produced is so small that further utilization of the manganese content is not worth while and the phosphorus content of the iron is too high for treatment in-the converter.
