Abstract

In a process for the simultaneous manufacture of iron or steel and Portland cement or hydraulic lime in a rotary furnace which is heated by a flame produced by burning pulverized carbonaceous material with the quantity of air necessary for the production of a mixture of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, the charge consists of iron ore, calcium carbonate and carbonaceous material with, if required, other constituents, such as silica and alumina, the ore, carbonaceous material and the other constituents, if present, being crushed to a size, e.g. 1 mm., sufficient to prevent them being entrained in the furnace gases while the calcium carbonate is crushed as fine as possible. In an example, the production of Portland cement clinker containing 22 per cent of silica, 8 of alumina, 66,94 of lime and 3,08 of other ingredients is referred to. If hydraulic lime is to be produced, the amount of lime used is 1,2 or 1,3 times, according to the desired index of hydraulicity, that used for the production of cement.
