Abstract

In a process of smelting ores, particularly iron ore, in a shaft furnace fuel with at least part of the ore in the form of briquettes, preferably egg-shaped and of not more than 100 c.c. volume, is charged to a height of 1.5 to 4 metres above tuyere level and blown by hot air blast, the tuyeres being in an opposed system and the distance apart of any pair across the furnace being not greater than 2 metres. The briquettes may be bound with pitch alone, or sulphite waste liquor, waterglass or lime, alone or in combination with pitch. The fuel may be poorly coking coal. A cold air blast may be used, and 95 per cent. oxygen may enrich either hot or cold blast, or may replace the air blast. The furnace may have a water-jacket and may be of rectangular cross section.
