Abstract

A process for the smelting of ores, more especially iron ores, in a blast furnace wherein the charging height from the plane of the blast tuyeres is substantially 1.5-3 metres, comprises smelting with the aid of blast briquettes of the fuel and ore, or part of the ore, drawing off the gases and vapours from the furnace, treating them to remove dust, treating them in a first condensing device to precipitate thick tar and then treating them in a second condensing device to precipitate thin fluid tar, the thick tar being used as a binding medium for the briquettes. Where only part of the ore is briquetted, the remainder is charged into the furnace in lump form having a size corresponding to that of the briquettes. The fuel may be a hard coal unsuitable for the production of smelting coke. Ores containing marly gangue may be used or marl and/or slaked lime may be used as an additional binding agent: water may be added to give the briquettes a water-content of from 5 to 8 per cent. The blast is at a lower pressure than normal and unheated air, oxygen-enriched air, or oxygen alone may be used. A water-jacketed furnace may be employed.
