Abstract
In a process of reducing iron ores, the ore, carbonaceous material and lime are charged into a shaft furnace, the internal height of which is less than its diameter, and blown with a fluid containing not less than 70 per cent of oxygen at a pressure not less than 50 lbs. per sq. in. The fluid may be a liquid or a gas and in the latter case oxygen may be obtained by the fractional distillation of liquid air or by the electrolysis of water, the hydrogen obtained being used to pre-reduce the ore. The blowing pressure is preferably 90-100 lbs. per sq. inch. Specification 642,084 is referred to. The Provisional Specification also refers to the pressure and velocity of the blast being five times that normally used in blast furnaces and to the hearth being at least 50 per cent greater in area than normal. Specification 642,096 is referred to.
