Abstract
Pig iron is refined by the conventional surface blowing process modified in that when the carbon content of the bath reaches 2-0.8% the iron content of the slag is increased by at least 50% and preferably by 200% by the addition of iron oxide, allowing the reactive slag so formed to remain in contact with the bath to extract at least the major portion of the phosphorus, removing the slag, and continuing blowing until the desired carbon content is reached. The iron oxide may be added in the form of scarfing scale, iron ore, or a combination thereof. After deslagging, a fresh slag may be formed and blowing continued using a reduced oxygen pressure to lower the rate of combustion of carbon. It is stated that the contact between the relatively cool slag and hot metal favours the dephosphorization reaction.
