Abstract

In the conversion of pig-iron to steel in the basic Bessemer process using oxygen-enriched air, the converter is blown in a sufficiently oblique position to prevent loss of metal entrained in the gases. The converter may be oval, rectangular, or elliptical in crosss-section immediately above the bath and the mouth may be placed symmetrically on the centre line. The oblique position may be not more than 30 degrees above that at which the tuyeres are just covered. The tuyeres may be 20-30 mm. in diameter and may all be placed in that half of the converter bottom which is nearer the surface of the bath in the oblique position. The oxygen content of the blast may be 25-60 per cent. and the addition of oxygen may be stopped during the dephosphorising period and before the end of the blow. Scrap or ore may be added to control the temperature.
