Abstract

Pig iron is refined prior to conversion to steel by blowing the molten metal with oxygen or oxygen-enriched air and an endothermically reacting substance. The oxygen may be passed through a central tube and the endothermically reacting substance through the annular space formed between the centre tube and an outer tube. The endothermic substance may be superheated steam, carbon dioxide, or iron oxide which may be carried in a stream of carbon dioxide or steam. The operation may be performed in an open ladle, the gases being blown on to the surface of the metal or through the metal. A slag containing Mn, Si, and V may be formed. It is stated that there is little or no formation of iron oxide fumes.
