Abstract
A process of refining steel comprises simultaneously blowing the melt from the top and the bottom, the bottom blast passing through tuyeres arranged in an annular area the inner diameter of which is at least half that of the interior surface of the bottom. Some of the tuyeres may be inclined towards the converter walls or may be inclined to produce a rotary movement of the melt, to produce a deeper layer of slag at the centre of the melt on to which the top blast impinges. The top blast may be moved relatively to the melt, e.g. by having the ring of tuyeres off-set with respect to the centre line of the converter, or by moving the top blowing lance transversely of the melt. Slag forming materials may be added in suspension in either the top or bottom blast.
