Abstract
A method of refining phosphorus containing raw iron in a converter using air, oxygen enriched air, or a mixture of oxygen and steam, comprises blowing oxygen rich gases periodically on to the surface of the bath and continuously or intermittantly adding cooling oxygen carriers to form a liquid, basic oxidizing slag, the dephosphorizing period being brought wholly or partly into the decarbonizing period, and the rate of decarbonization being maintained at 0.15 per cent to 0.20 per cent per minute. A lance may be used for surface blowing which may be carried out until dephosphorization is complete, the remainder of the decarbonization, if required, being performed by bottom blowing. Slag forming materials, e.g. lime, may be added at the beginning or in portions during the refining and the cooling oxygen carriers, e.g. oxidic iron ore or mill scale, added continuously during blowing. The area of the bottom tuyeres may be reduced. The pressure of gas blown on the surface should be so low that the slag layer is not penetrated.
