Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of basic Bessemer steel under a single slag and having a bath depth less than normal, the normal weight of the bath is maintained or increased by widening the bath whilst at the same time the blast is enriched with oxygen or oxides, or oxides are added to the bath, or a combination of these expedients is used and the charge is blown to .02 per cent to .035 per cent phosphorus to produce a low phosphorus, low nitrogen steel. Iron oxide or mill scale may be added to the charge, preferably 75 per cent during the foreblow and 25 per cent at "drop of flame." The converter lining may be made thinner, e.g. by a brick lining instead of a monolithic structure, in order to accommodate a charge of normal weight but of shallower depth. The metal may be deoxidized or alloy additions made in the converter, the ladle or the mould. Specification 591,841 is referred to.
