Abstract

[Also in Divisions F3-F4] Low carbon steel, produced in gas fired cupola furnace 1, and an alloying composition produced in a similar furnace 2, pass to rotatable gas fired partitioned mixing vessel 3, from which alloyed steel may be withdrawn from taphole 16. Furnace 1 is charged with pig iron, steel scrap, limestone and iron scale, the charge resting on the shoulders 5, the molten metal produced then falling into the well 8 to form a pool into which oxygen from lance 9 is blown to effect refinement. The steel so produced flows through duct 12 and hollow trunnion 11 to vessel 3. Pig iron and blast furnace ferromanganese and ferrosilicon are likewise charged into furnace 2 the molten alloying composition from which also passes into vessel 3, which is provided with a slag taphole 17.
