Abstract

Steel is denitridized by the addition of a mixture of hydrated sodium carbonate and boron or lithium. The boron may be in the form of ferro-boron and anhydrous sodium carbonate may be included in the mixture, the proportions of the mixture in this case being: Na2CO3.10H2O-12 parts by weight; Na2CO3-12 parts by weight; ferroboron-1 part by weight. When treating steel made by the basic Bessemer process, the steel is blown in the usual way and, after deslagging, the mixture is thrown into the converter. The steel is then blown for a short time to submerge the reagents, the converter lowered, the slag run off and the steel deoxidized with ferromanganese. With the acid Bessemer process, the steel is blown and deoxidized in the normal way and the mixture is added to the ladle before tapping. The mixture may also be added in the open-hearth furnace or in the stream of metal. The hydrated sodium carbonate component of the mixture causes some dephosphorization as described in Specification 761,969.
