Abstract

Manganese-containing basic open-hearth slag is refined by firstly making it acidic by adding 300-600 Kgs. of silica or 400-800 Kgs. of titania per ton of slag and then effecting a partial reduction of the slag to remove most of the phosphorus and sulphur while retaining in the slag substantially all the manganese for subsequent use of the slag as a source of manganese, e.g. as a slag-forming additive in a basic open-hearth process or a source of ferro-manganese in a reduction process. A fluxing agent may be added with the titania or silica, and the partial reduction carried out in an electric furnace using carbon, with or without silicon, aluminium &c., as a reducing agent; iron may be added to the electric furnace to assist in the removal of phosphorus and sulphur.
