Abstract
In a process for the dephosphorization of pig iron or steel, a bath of the metal is agitated, in an oxidising medium e.g. industrial oxygen which is blown in thus also producing the agitation, with lime which contains not more than 2 per cent by weight of silicon and not more than 1,5 per cent by weight of ferric oxide, manganese dioxide, magnesium oxide or alumina. The additive is granulated, pure and refractory so that its complete fusion is retarded and the formed slag is removed from the melt before its complete fusion. When an additive other than alumina is used, alumina is added thereto so that it is present in an amount of 1-20 per cent by weight in the formed slag.
