Abstract
A process of recovering vanadium from pigiron, cast iron and steel and simultaneously removing, if desired, phosphorus and/or silicon, consists in oxidizing these elements by running the molten metal on to iron sulphate and/or alkali metal sulphate and/or calcium sulphate in admixture with an alkali metal, preferably sodium, carbonate and/or oxide and/or silicate, the proportion of sulphate to the alkali metal carbonate and/or oxide and/or silicate being between 10 : 1 and 1 : 1, preferably 3 : 1. The reaction may take place in a ladle or mixer and the phosphorus may be oxidized more quickly than the silicon by using a silicate in combination with the sulphate.
