Abstract
Steel is produced by the following steps: (a) Melting in a basic electric furnace; (b) Adjusting the manganese content thereof so as not exceed 0.25% at the end of the oxidation period; (c) Treating the steel with a final reducing slag containing a maximum of 10% silica; (d) casting the steel thus produced in a vacuum ensuring that the addition of deoxidants does not raise the manganese content above 0.25% and the silicon content to above 0.1%. In an example the steel was melted under one slag, oxidized by a second slag rich in iron oxide, a third slag being formed and oxidation continued by blowing with an oxygen lance into the bath. A reducing slag containing coal dust and calcium silicon was used for stage (c). During vacuum casting, deoxidants such as magnesium, aluminium, cerium, titanium, or alloys thereof may be added.
