Abstract

Metal alloys, and particularly ferrosilicon, are refined by processing them in an acid-lined open-arc electric furnace with a molten slag containing at least 50% of silica. In its application to the treatment of ferro-silicon a slag composed of silica and lime may be used. Fluorspar may be added to control the fluidity of the slag. Alakali metal salts may also be added and may replace the lime wholly or in part. Molten ferro-silicon may be transferred from a submerged-arc furnace to the open-arc furnace and agitated therein, e.g. by poling. Before casting the alloy, with slag, may be further agitated by pouring from one ladle to another. By this treatment ferro-silicon containing at least 14% silicon may be produced containing not more than 0.5% impurities including 0.05% or less of aluminium.
