Abstract

A process for producing cast iron containing nodular graphite and less than 0.04% magnesium comprises adding to the molten cast iron calcium silicide, calcium fluoride and a magnesium alloy, the amount of magnesium alloy being in excess of that required to produce more than 0.04% magnesium and the amounts of calcium silicide and calcium fluoride being such that less than 0.04% of magnesium is retained and casting the metal. The magnesium alloy may be a magnesium ferro-silicon containing 8% magnesium, and 1% of each of the magnesium alloy, calcium silicon and calcium fluoride may be added to the melt. The melt is preferably low in sulphur though not necessarily so and, if required, ferro-silicon may be added as a graphitizer.
