Abstract
In a method of producing speroidal form of graphite in alloyed or unalloyed cast iron by means of magnesium retained in the iron as cast, the sulphur content of the molten metal is reduced to less than 0.02 per cent before magnesium is added. The amount of magnesium added may then be such as to retain at least 0.02 per cent. The melt is then inoculated and cast. Basic slag, with or without calcium, may be used as the desulphurizing agent. Treatment of a cast-iron containing 3.6 per cent C. 1.5 per cent Si, 0.6 per cent Mn, 0.1 per cent S, 0.025 per cent P with a desulphurizing slag consisting of 60 per cent lime, 32 per cent sodium silicate and 8 per cent cryolite, is referred to.
