Abstract

In a modification of the invention of the parent Specification grey cast iron having the free carbon wholly or predominantly in the form of nodular graphite is produced by adding Ce to a molten iron which on casting, gives a grey iron containing less than 2.3 per cent of Si, not more than 0.02 per cent of S and not more than 0.5 per cent of P the amount of cerium added being such as to give a grey cast iron containing at least 0.02 per cent Ce and the percentage of Ni and/or Cu, if present, being less than three times the deficiency in the percentage of Si from 2.3. After addition of cerium the melt may be treated with a sileceous graphitizing inoculant such as ferro-silicon.
