Abstract

A sulphur-, carbon- and oxidation-resistant alloy consists of Cr 7-8%, Al 6.5-8% and Fe the remainder, the alloy being free from contamination by oxides of Al and Cr and having an oxygen content no higher than that which corresponds to the equilibrium between calcium and oxygen at the alloy melting point. The alloy may also contain C and Si in commercial amounts and carbide formers, the total amount of the C, Si and carbide-formers not exceeding 1.5%. The alloy may be prepared by melting together electrolytic Fe and Fe-Cr without a slag, deoxidizing with 0.1% Al and 0.5% Mn and further deoxidizing the melt with Ca. Fluorspar is then added to the Fe/Cr bath. A bath of molten aluminium is deoxidized with 0.1% Ca, degassed with chlorine and poured through the fluorspar slag into the Fe/Cr melt with vigorous mechanical agitation. After stratification and removal of the slag, the alloy is cast quickly. Specification 798,892 is referred to.
