Abstract

A slag rich in alumina in soluble form and having less than 15 per cent silica is formed during a smelting process by substituting for at least a part of the ordinary coke a lime coke and proportionately reducing the amount of lime in the ore-charge, the content of lime coke being such that at least 40 per cent and preferably the whole of the silica in the coke will be chemically bound by the lime in the lime coke. The amount of lime in the lime coke may be 10 per cent when lime coke alone is used as the coke charge or 12 per cent when the coke charge is made up of 12 per cent ordinary coke and 83 per cent lime coke. German Specification 274,853 is referred to.
