Abstract

In a process for refining pig-iron by blowing oxidizing gases on to the surface of a molten metal bath, the cubic capacity of the converter is kept below 0.9 cubic metres per ton of molten metal. This condition may be achieved in a normal converter by increasing the amount of the charge, e.g. by increasing the height of metal by 16-20 per cent. The blast may exert a pressure on the surface of the metal equivalent to less than 0.7 kgs./sq. cm.; as described in Specification 712,213.
