Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of Bessemer steel the bath depth is decreased compared with normal practice so that a blast of lower pressure may be used, whilst at the same time the tuyene area is increased to avoid lengthening the blast or to shorten it, the normal weight of charge being maintained by increasing the surface area of the bath. The decrease in bath depth and increase in tuyene area may be not less than 10 per cent and preferably not less than 20 per cent. The blast may be enriched with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases or, during the latter stages of blowing, materials containing oxygen or oxygen and carbonaceous matter may be added to the bath to give an equivalent of 30 per cent oxygen in the blast. The process may be operated in conjunction with the processes described in Specifications 493,610 and 518,212 to produce low phosphorus low nitrogen steel.
