Abstract
A method of blowing metal baths, particularly pig iron baths, with oxygen or other oxidizing gases from above, comprises blowing the gas in such a manner that it impinges on to an area which amounts to between 1/10 and 1/25 of the total area of the bath surface. The area is defined as the area of the cross-section of the jet at a distance from the jet orifice corresponding to the distance of the bath surface from the jet orifice. The energy of the blast is preferably such that it is just sufficient to remove the slag and the underlying layer of iron oxide but not penetrate or depress the surface of the metal. Specification 737,005 is referred to.
