Abstract

<PICT:0976158/C6-C7/1> In a process for refining iron in a converter by blowing with a jet of oxygen, which may or may not contain another gas and which contains a dephosphorizing agent, foaming of the slag is detected by recording the intensity of acoustic radiation emitted, a distinct reduction thereof indicating the onset of foaming. Suitable apparatus consists of a unidirectional microphone, band-pass filter, and recorder. As shown in Fig. 1, converter 1 has a hood 3 equipped with oxygen lance 5 slidable through aperture 4. The hood has a further aperture 6 through which acoustic radiation escapes to be monitored by microphone 7.
