Abstract

Articles of magnetite of a thickness of at least 4mms. are formed from smooth-surfaced articles of non-porous ferrous metal by bricking up the surface to form depressions of small width and depth and subsequently heating in a mildly oxidizing gaseous atmosphere at high temperature and continuing the heating until the iron is completely converted into a coherent body of magnetite which has a smooth surface free from depressions. The surface may be broken up by grooving, scratching, sandblasting, etching or boring holes therein. Oxidation may be effected in steam at 1050 DEG C. Specification 16,902/11, [Class 1 (iii)], is referred to.ALSO:Smooth surfaced articles of non-porous ferrous metal are treated by breaking up the surface to form depressions of small width and depth and subsequently heating in a mildly oxidizing gaseous atmosphere at high temperature and continuing the heating until a coherent layer of magnetite is formed, having a thickness of at least 2 mms. and which fills the depressions and forms a smooth surface free from depressions. The surface may be broken up by grooving, scratching, sandblasting, etching or boring holes therein. Oxidation may be effected in steam at 1000 DEG C. or 1100 DEG C. or in carbon dioxide containing not more than 10 per cent. of carbon monoxide at 1000 DEG C. Specification 16902/11, [Class 1 (iii)], is referred to.
