Abstract

A uniform, strongly adherent, sulphide coating is formed on the surface of a metal or alloy consisting predominantly of iron or nickel by the simultaneous action of hydrogen sulphide and oxygen in the presence of moisture, prior to plastic deformation. The hydrogen sulphide may be applied as such or may be formed by the dissociation of ammonium sulphide. After descaling and removal of excess water, the metal may be enclosed in a moist state in a wooden box into which the vapour of hydrogen sulphide or ammonium sulphide is introduced; the box should be large enough to include sufficient air for the reaction. Alternatively, a solution of ammonium sulphide may be dried on the surface and the metal subjected to the action of air in the presence of water vapour. Specification 455,077 is referred to.
