Abstract

H2S is selectively absorbed from gases containing H2S and CO2 by washing them with an aqueous solution of di-potassium hydrogen phosphate containing at least 2 and preferably 5 gram molecules of the salt per litre, the time of contact between the gases and the solution being such that all the H2S is absorbed. The contact time may be between several seconds and one minute and the treatment is preferably carried out at superatmospheric pressure, e.g. 20 kg/cm2. A solution of tetrapotassium pyrophosphate containing dipotassium hydrogen phosphate as a product of hydrolysis may be employed in the treatment. The solution leaving the absorption step may be regenerated by reducing the pressure on the solution and simultaneously agitating it or dividing it into fine streams or drops, and/or subjecting it to the stripping action of an inert gas. CO2 absorbed in the solution may for the most part be removed from the solution before regeneration by treating it with a portion of the H2S obtained in the regeneration thereby obtaining a purer hydrogen sulphide from the subsequent regeneration. To obtain in the regeneration H2S almost free from CO2, the solution before it is returned to the absorption step and after it has been regenerated as described above is heated to reduce its bi-carbonate content so that the solution leaving the absorption step will have a low CO2 content.
