Abstract
A hydrocarbon oil entirely or substantially entirely freed from mercaptans is obtained by treating a mercaptan-containing hydrocarbon oil with one or more copper compounds, preferably in the presence of oxygen, and then subjecting the oil, which is now freed from mercaptans, to an after treatment with an absorbent impregnated with hydrochloric acids to wholly or substantially eliminate traces of copper compounds. The absorbent, for example activated carbon, silica gel, pumice, or fuller's earth, may be in the form of a contact bed. The treating temperatures may be 20-65 DEG C. The copper compound is preferably cupric chloride, with or without sodium or ammonium chloride, and the used material may be regenerated by treating with an oxygen containing gas or a peroxide or ozone. In one form, the oil is passed together with oxygen from the top to the bottom of a single column filled with activated carbon, the top containing the copper compound and the bottom being impregnated with hydrochloric acid. Prior to the above treatment the oil may be treated with a caustic alkali solution to eliminate hydrogen sulphite and other acid compounds, and/or with an absorbent impregnated with hydrochloric acid to remove traces of metal compounds.
