Abstract
Acetylenic or aromatic hydrocarbons are purified by contacting the hydrocarbon in the gaseous or liquid state with an aqueous solution of one or more alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorites, e.g. sodium chlorite. The chlorite solution may be maintained at a pH of about 5 or 6. An oxidation catalyst, e.g. manganous chloride, may be added to the solution. The purification process may be used in conjunction with other purification processes, e.g. the purification process may be followed by an alkaline treatment in a wet apparatus such as a caustic soda column, or in a dry apparatus such as a tank of slaked lime. In the examples, acetylene is treated with aqueous sodium chlorite and benzene is treated with aqueous sodium chlorite and manganous chloride.
