Abstract

Hydrogen chloride containing as impurities organic substances with or without chlorine is purified by adding thereto chlorine, hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing gas, and water-vapour, oxygen, and/or air, and effecting combustion of the hydrogen and chlorine. There is preferably a slight molar excess of hydrogen over chlorine. In a modification, the contaminated acid is added to the reactants in a commercial process for the production of hydrogen chloride by reaction between a hydrogen-containing gas and chlorine in presence of steam.
