Abstract
In the production of hydrogen cyanide by interacting gaseous ammonia, oxygen and methane over a platinum metal catalyst, preferably a platinum-rhodium alloy catalyst, at a temperature of 1,000 -1,260 DEG C. a ratio of 1.4 to 2.5, preferably 1.5, moles of methane per mole of ammonia and 1.0 to 1.5 moles of oxygen per mole of methane is employed. When essentially pure methane or natural gas purified to a methane content of at least 96 per cent is employed, the optimum ratio of oxygen to methane is 1.04 to 1.1. When natural gas containing between 80 and 96 per cent methane is employed the optimum ratio is 1.15 to 1.3. The gaseous mixture may be preheated to a temperature of 300 to 350 DEG C. before passing over the catalyst. Specification 361,004 is referred to.
