Abstract

1,236,660. Silicon carbide. LAPORTE CHEMICALS Ltd. 24 Oct., 1969 [26 Aug., 1968], No. 40731/68. Heading C1A. Silicon carbide is prepared by heating a gaseous mixture containing a silicon fluoride and a hydrocarbon in a reaction zone and converting at least part of the hydrogen fluoride thus formed into silicon fluoride for use in preparing further silicon carbide. The silicon fluoride is preferably silicon tetrafluoride and the hydrocarbon is preferably a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon, preferably methane. The atomic ratio of silicon to carbon in the gaseous mixture may be from 4: 1 to 1: 4 and the gaseous mixture may contain a diluent gas preferably hydrogen or hydrogen fluoride. The hydrogen fluoride formed by the reaction may be converted to silicon tetrafluoride by reacting the hydrogen fluoride with a source of silica, preferably quartz, at an elevated temperature of from 120‹ to 160‹ C. The silicon tetrafluoride thus formed may be treated with concentrated sulphuric acid at about 80‹ C. to remove associated water.
