Abstract
1,216,065. Boron trifluoride. KALI-CHEMIE A.G. 7 Feb.,1969 [22 Feb., 1968], No. 6853/69. Heading ClA. Boron trifluoride is produced by reacting boric acid (ortho-, meta- or pyro-boric acid or boron trioxide) with an at least equimolar amount of anhydrous HF at 80-160‹ C. in sufficient oleum for the molar quantity of sulphur trioxide present in the reaction mixture to correspond to from 90-110% by weight of the molar quantity of water set free by the reaction. In carrying out the process, HF may be introduced into a mixture of boric acid and oleum. Alternatively, boric acid may be introduced directly or in solution in H 2 50 4 into a mixture of HF in oleum or vice versa. For performing the reaction continuously it is preferred to meter the boric acid/sulphuric acid mixture and the HF/oleum mixture into the reactor in the required proportions.
