Abstract

1,218,997. Ammonium phosphates. FREEPORT SULPHUR CO. 20 Nov., 1968 [20 Feb., 1968], No. 65094/68. Heading C1A. Ammonium phosphates are prepared by a continuous process comprising converting phosphate rock to phosphoric acid by treatment with sulphuric acid, the phosphoric acid obtained then being used after concentration, if necessary, as an aqueous solution containing from 20% to 85% by weight of P 2 O 5 for treatment with an ammonium sulphate of formula (NH 4 ) x H 2-x SO 3 where x is from 1 to 2, to produce an ammonium phosphate, the sulphur dioxide produced as by-product being converted to sulphuric acid by catalytic reaction with air and water and returned to convert additional phosphate rock to phosphoric acid. The sulphite is preferably mono-ammonium sulphite or di-ammonium sulphite. Depending on the composition of the starting materials and the stoichiometry employed mono-ammonium phosphate, diammonium phosphate or mixtures thereof, may be obtained from the system.
