Abstract
In the production of a fertilizer by decomposing phosphate rock with nitric acid and precipitating calcium compounds by ammoniating the resulting solution, calcium nitrate is converted into ammonium nitrate by adding ammonia and in addition, sulphur dioxide, ammonium sulphite or ammonium bisulphite. The resulting fertilizer contains dicalcium phosphate, ammonium nitrate and calcium sulphite and the phosphate component is said to remain soluble in ammonium citrate when added to soil. In carrying out the process according to the invention, natural phosphate rock is subjected to nitric acid attack to produce a solution in which the molar ratio NO3/CaO is approximately 2. This solution is then ammoniated, preferably in a continuous process, to form a suspension of dicalcium phosphate and possibly calcium fluoride in a partly neutralized decomposition liquor in which the molar ratio NH3/NO3 is approximately 0,6. At this stage in the process some water may be evaporated and the weakly acidic mixture further neutralized with ammonia and either sulphur dioxide, ammonium sulphite or ammonium bisulphite whereupon the calcium nitrate is converted into ammonium nitrate. The product may then be granulated and dried. Prior to granulation potassium salts may be added to produce an N.P.K. fertilizer. Specifification 640,149 is referred to.
