Abstract

Concentrated fertilizers containing ammonium phosphate are prepared by reacting together 2.0 to 2.5 moles of calcium phosphate, 6 to 30 moles of ammonium nitrate, 2 to 6 moles of ammonia and less than 3 moles of H2SO4 to form a melt having a pH 2.5 to 5.5 (measured by dissolving 1 part of melt in 9 parts water) at a temperature of 130 DEG C. to b.p. of the melt and cooling the melt. Ca(H2PO4)2, NH4NO3, H2SO4\t and NH3 may be added to a previously prepared melt which may be at its b.p. and comprise NH4NO3, NH4H2PO4, CaSO4, CaHPO4 and water; CaHPO4 being at 0 to 100% by weight based on the CaSO4 and 2 to 7% water may be present. A gas which is inert to the reaction (e.g. air) may be passed through the melt. The Ca(H2PO4)2 may be in the form of single or tripl superphosphate or a mixture of these and it may be used as a slurry formed by reacting phosphate rock with H2SO4 and/or H3PO4 in the presence of part or all the NH4NO3 used in the process. NH4NO3 may be added as an 85-95% aqueous solution at 80-130 DEG C. The H2SO4 may be > 95% by weight and added so that the amount of sulphate ion present is at least sufficient to react with all the Ca derived from Ca(H2PO4)2. In order to increase the proportion of water-soluble P2O5 above that available from triple superphosphate, H3PO4 and an equivalent amount of NH3 may be included in the mixture. The product melt may contain 40 to 85% by weight NH4NO3 and the N: P2O5 ratio of the melt may lie between 3: 1 to 1: 2. In the examples the process may be carried out in one or more reaction vessels. The product is disintegrated after cooling to give non-caking granules.
