Abstract
A fertilizer is obtained by forming a mixture containing ammonium nitrate and ammonium phosphate containing at least 10% by weight of ammonium phosphate and in which the ratio of ammonium phosphate to ammonium nitrate is in the range 9:1 to 1:9 by weight, the ammonium phosphate having a NH3/H3PO4 mole ration of 1.1:1 to 1.3:1, the mixture having a pH of 5 to 6, and taking the mixture to or maintaining it at a temperature of 140 DEG to 180 DEG C. to reduce, if necessary, the moisture content of the mixture to 0% to 8% by weight, and then forming granules from the melt. The mixture of ammonium nitrate and ammonium phosphate may be obtained by ammoniating a mixture of nitric and phosphoric acids or by adding ammonia and ammonium nitrate to phosphoric acid; sulphuric acid may be present so that the final product may contain ammonium sulphate. The mixture may also contain potassium chloride, potassium sulphate, potassium nitrate and urea. Examples are given. Specification 775,114 is referred to.
