Abstract

Calcium nitrate, separated from nitric acid solutions of natural phosphates by cooling and centrifuging, and still impregnated with nitric and phosphoric acids is treated with urea to neutralize the free acid, thereby forming urea phosphate and nitrate, and to combine with the calcium nitrate in substitution for water of crystallization, to form the compound Ca(NO3)2.4CO(NH2)2. Specifications 246,377, 339,500, [both in Class III], 359,680 and 685,193, [both in Group III], are referred to.ALSO:Calcium nitrate, impregnated with nitric acid and with at least 0,4 per cent. by weight of phosphoric acid, which has been separated from the solution resulting from attacking natural phosphate with nitric acid, is treated with urea to form a neutral fertiliser containing urea nitrate and urea phosphate. If excess urea is employed it combines with the calcium nitrate in substitution for the water of crystallisation in the form of Ca (NO3)2. 4 CO-(NH2)2. Neutralisation of the free acid of the calcium nitrate may be effected in part by alumino-calcium phosphates and the free phosphoric acid content may be deliberately increased and then neutralised, in part, with calcium or ammonium compounds prior to incorporating urea. According to examples (1) crystalline calcium nitrate obtained by cooling and centrifuging a solution obtained by attacking phosphate with nitric acid was melted at 60 DEG C. and an equal weight of urea added. After concentrating at 100 DEG C. a fertiliser containing 33,2 per cent. nitrogen resulted. Calcium carbonate may be added. (IV) Calcium nitrate was treated with urea as in (I) and calcined alumino-calcium phosphate was added, together with potassium sulphate. The resulting paste was granulated with an equal weight of recycled dried dust from preceding operations. Specifications 246,377, 339,500 [both in Class 111], 359,680 and 685,193 [both in Group III] are referred to.
